Following their report yesterday that Matthew Libatique will be joining director Darren Aronofsky as the director’s cinematographer on the X-Men Origins sequel, Hitfix have now reported that, during an interview promoting Black Swan, Aronofsky himself stated that the title for the new film will be ‘The Wolverine’.
According to Hitfix:
The film that he’s directing is officially called “The Wolverine,” and there won’t be a number attached to it. In our interview, he referred to the movie as a “one-off,” and he emphasized that the film isn’t a sequel in any conventional sense.
Interesting stuff. The title itself suggets something more serious and sombre, but do Aronofsky’s comments mean the film will do away with all the current continuity between the exisitng X films? Will it get (hopefully) much more gritty? Matthew Vaugn’s X-Men: First Class seems to be doing a good job of building its own workd within the larger on-screen universe, so there’s no reason why Aronofsky can’t put his stamp on the film while still adhering to what’s gone before.
